Electricity Motion sensor escalators increase energy saving

Environmental Sustainability – Electrictity

Environmental Sustainability Electricity

From the maximum use of natural light to the incorporation of energy efficient lighting and emission minimising climate control, the CTICC is designed to be green at heart.

CTICC2020 200915 305 hi res scaled

CTICC Sustainability Electricity

During 2021/2022 the CTICC used a total of 31 477.5 gigajoules of energy from primary sources (fuel) and electricity generation. This amounts to a 17.8% increase year-on-year.

The increase in energy usage was due to an uptake in events after lockdown restrictions were removed.

Future energy-saving plans

Our ability to make further savings is now incremental, but we continue to seek out possible areas of saving where we can. One example is the replacement of all the CTICC 1 gallery lights along the CTICC 1 corridors and walkways, which is currently underway.

These lights use a considerable amount of electricity in their current form; but replacement with LEDs will reduce the wattage and power consumption by 75% – a substantial saving. The installation of PV solar power generation panels on our rooves is also still part of our five-year capital expenditure plan.

A more immediate decision has been made to install heat pumps for more efficient water heating in CTICC 1. These will replace our existing boilers, which use a significant amount of power.

The tender has been awarded but the project was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the installation of the Hospital of Hope in the CTICC 1 exhibition halls.

Environmental Sustainability Waste

Environmental Sustainability – Waste

Environmental Sustainability Waste

The CTICC is committed to reducing the impact of waste on the environment, which is generated as part of the events and exhibitions we host.

Environmental Sustainability Waste

Managing our Waste Diversion

The overall weight of waste produced has increased from 37 tonnes to 200 tonnes during the 2021/22 financial year, with diversion to landfill at 20% of total waste.

The reduced number of events held during the year generated general waste that could not be easily recycled.

When Covid-19 restrictions were lifted and CTICC began to host larger events once more, the amount of recyclable waste increased.

Investing in African Mining Indaba an international events that brings thousands of delegates to the cticc
News

Over 100 international events confirmed for the CTICC

Over 100 international conferences, which are expected to bring over 127 000 delegates to Cape Town, has been confirmed to take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre up until 2026.

This comes after ICCA’s (International Congress and Convention Association) announcement confirming Cape Town as the number one meetings destination in Africa.

“The international conference segment is one of the centre’s key focus areas and presents tremendous potential for the CTICC and the city as a whole. Having secured 105 international conferences up until 2026, these events will have a significant impact on the Western Cape and South African economy. With South Africa’s economic growth prospects at 1.2% in 2019, securing international events can only positively affect our economy and bolster much needed job creation,” said Julie-May Ellingson, Chief Executive Officer at the CTICC.

Most recently, the centre has been awarded nine international conferences. Of these, the World Economic Forum and World Dairy Summit had been previously hosted at the CTICC.

Here is a list of the most recent events confirmed to take place at the CTICC:

World Economic Forum on Africa 2019
World Dairy Summit 2020
World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF), Global Engineering Deans Council        Conference (GEDC) & Global Student Forum (GSF) 2020
INSOL International Conference 2020
Entrepreneurs Organisation Global Leadership Conference 2020
International Symposium on Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy in Veterinary Medicine 2021
International Symposium on Pneumococci and Pneumococcal Diseases 2022
World Association of Waterborne Infrastructure – PIANC World Congress 2022
INF (International Netball Federation) Netball World Cup 2023

The World Dairy Summit 2020 will provide an opportunity for the South African dairy industry to gain exposure to major dairy producing countries from all over the world.

The summit, which is themed Wholesome and Sustainable, is expected to bring together 1 200 delegates from 65 countries.

Topical issues on the agenda include farm management, animal health and welfare, environmental challenges, and research and development.

“The dairy industry, like many other industries, is complex and needs to deal with international common challenges as a collective. These challenges are highly complex, require a scientific approach, needs a structured environment and requires the meeting of likeminded individuals, working in groups with the guidance and participation of world experts and leaders,” said Melt Loubser, Chairman and Media Liaison of the South African Mils Processors Organisation.

Why host the event in Cape Town and the CTICC for the second time?

“The experience we had in 2012 at the CTICC was professional, very effective, well executed and the venue was truly world-class. The size of the venue and the fact that the whole conference included all parallel sessions and could be accommodated under one roof was very positive. The infrastructure of Cape Town, safety, the pristine beauty, the cosmopolitan atmosphere, excellent accommodation, spectacular sightseeing and wonderful culinary experiences contributed to this decision,” added Loubser.

The Entrepreneurs Organisation Global Leadership Conference 2020 will take place in Africa for the first time.

The leadership conference will bring together188 member chapters from 58 countries.

According to Jason Sze, Chairperson of Entrepreneurs Organisation (EO), the 2 000 participants can expect intense training and information-sharing sessions.

“As EO’s flagship event, the Global Leadership Conference, creates community among our leadership and allows us to train incoming chapter member leaders in an intense track training programme developed by our committee members and facilitated by EO facilitators,” said Sze.

Hosting the event on African soil for the first time, Sze said:

“The EO’s Board of Directors came to Cape Town for a meeting and we loved the experience… and said ‘Why aren’t we coming here for our Global Leadership Conference?’. We loved the favourable exchange rate, the exotic location and were very impressed by the great local hospitality.”

LCP – Call 2 Care

Call 2 Care

Call 2 Care is a Cape Town based non-profit organization, mandated to improve lives through educational outreach projects and socially conscious volunteer events.

Their mission:

To deliver sustainable outreach initiatives, in collaboration with, and to the benefit of under-resourced communities, delivering solutions tailored to the needs of beneficiary partners. By connecting those who can support, to those in need of support, Call 2 Care is able to go further and do more, together.

What they do

The NPO began as a passion to support people and became a solution. Started on Heritage Day, 24 September 2014, Call 2 Care has, every day since, worked towards remembering and honouring South Africa’s cultural heritage by connecting with underprivileged communities to improve health, education, financial security and work-readiness. They also uplift and empower local artists through fundraisers, provide access to basic needs and implement food gardens so that beneficiaries can earn a living and feed themselves.

CTICC LCP Call2Care

Their projects

Call 2 Care was built on the foundation of encouraging independence and allowing beneficiaries to progress beyond their dependency on organisations. Consequently, many of their projects are aimed at working with communities to support them with the skills and tools  needed to empower themselves and inspire others.

Literacy Tutor support

LCP – help2read

help2read

help2read targets underprivileged primary schools across South Africa, providing children who struggle to read with one-on-one attention.

Their mission:

The gift of literacy can transform a life, a community and even a country. When a person can read, they are able to get the most out of their education, which can lead to securing a job and breaking the cycle of poverty. This results in strong, empowered communities and nations, and help2read is working towards making this vision a reality.

What they do

This non-profit organisation (NPO) is an English literacy intervention programme that has been in operation since 2006. Through consistent literacy input, reading help and fun activities, the children that participate in the programme not only learn to read, but fall in love with it.

CTICC LCP help2read

Their projects

The organisation recruits and trains unemployed, literate adults from township communities to be Literacy Tutors who, in turn, assist with teaching and running the programme in township schools. The tutors receive an income and participate in personal development and work readiness programmes, helping to secure a better future for themselves and their families.

This full-circle approach means that not only do our youth benefit but so do those who assist them. This type of support is crucial to transforming and uplifting communities.
