It has dedicated one of its strategic pillars to social and environmental sustainability. This includes the event management supply chain. 60th Global Summit of Consumer Goods ForumWhat we set out to achieveFor the 60th Global Summit, the CGF started implementing several concrete and measurable actions in partnership with the CTICC.These related to solid and food waste management, the use of sustainable products, and the use of energy. Their objective is to gradually green all CGF events around the world.Implementing the upcycling planThe CGF committed to collecting detailed data on solid and food waste, as well as the overproduction of merchandising, using it as a benchmark for future CGF events. They further wished to ensure that all materials used in the exhibition area were recycled. This was supported by the CTICC’s three-bin, colour-coded waste system, which operates in all areas of the CTICC.The CGF decided to serve plated food to delegates, rather than offer a buffet service, as this significantly reduced the amount of food waste. They also chose to donate packed and unprepared food to local community projects. The global summit included several spin-off events hosted by CGF sponsors. In keeping with the focus on sustainability, sponsor Pepsico hosted a ‘Zero-Waste’ Luncheon in collaboration with the CTICC Food & Beverage team. The CTICC coordinated the donation of stand materials to local community projects, and ensured all menus and materials used for the ‘Zero-Waste’ Luncheon were recyclable. The success of the initiative“The summit has been hosted all over the world and this was the first time it has been on the African continent. Thank you to you and your team for showcasing Cape Town, South Africa and Africa in such a positive way! Our team found it to be one of the most user-friendly venues that they have used in the past 30 years.”~ Gareth Ackerman, Co-Chair of the CGF Board Green Your Event Sustainability FAQs Maps & Directions ic_visitor_facilities Created with Sketch. AfricaComAn event of this size, using both CTICC 1 and CTICC 2, means many large exhibition stands are custom-built for the occasion and must be responsibly removed from our site afterwards. The client was aware the event had a large carbon footprint and wanted to offset this, by creating environmental and social sustainability initiatives. One of our local community partners, Mothers Unite, took delivery of the wood ‘waste’ generated by exhibition stands being broken down. What we set out to achieveThe objective of the project was to ensure that all ‘waste’ wood from breaking down stands was diverted from landfill and reused or upcycled. The challenge was to find organisations that would be able to find uses for the particular type and volumes of wood from which stands are made.Implementing the upcycling planPromotional material was created through sustainability videos, which showed and recorded the success of the initiative, and featured interviews with Carol Jacobs of Mothers Unite, as well as our CEO, Julie-May Ellingson.Sustainable AfricaCom – Making an Impact on Cape Town, Part 1This video celebrates the impact Informa’s content has had on creating growth and opportunity for young Africans in the technology and communications sectors.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqBCtnx8HCs&feature=youtu.behttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7zNrejIJBw&feature=youtu.beWe also recorded the community’s response to the arrival of the wood and how it was used in various ways: To secure living spaces, for carpentry and making furniture, as well as for the Mothers Unite woodwork project, which creates items that can be sold for profit. The final facts and figuresThis sustainability collaboration allowed us to divert most of the wood generated at the AfricaCom from landfill. We were able to provide 101.2 metric tonnes of wood to the communities of the Seawinds and surrounding areas. The wood ‘waste’ made up 66.6% of the waste generated at the event, contributing to the remarkable overall recycling figure of 97.4% for the entire event. Future plans include ensuring that upcycled wood can be distributed to other organisations and used directly to build skills and generate income.101.2Metric TonnesOf waste was diverted from landfill.97.4%Of all event waste was diverted from landfill. Presented at the CTICC every three years by Wines of South Africa (WOSA), it is the most successful international wine trade show in the southern hemisphere. This trade show brings together the best of the Cape wine industry with international and local buyers, offering more than 300 exhibitor stands.Cape WineWhat we set out to achieveThe event aims to be environmentally friendly and most exhibition stands are made out of recyclable Xanita board. There is also a strong emphasis on the recycling of glass and plastic. The CTICC ran a project in collaboration with Cape Wine to divert as much waste as possible from landfill during the event.Implementing the upcycling planThe CTICC took further steps to divert waste during the week of Cape Wine, including additional briefings to our Waste Champions Team and relevant service providers. A Waste Champions WhatsApp group was introduced to quickly identify and solve potential waste issues. The CTICC collaborated with WISP, a free facilitation service funded by the Western Cape Government. WISP identified MPact, a cardboard recycler, to assist with the recycling of Xanita board. They also coordinated the records of waste removed by its various solution providers.Cape Wine requested two additional skips, which proved to be an essential part of the waste diversion process for the large amount of glass and PET waste generated by the event.Organic waste was also sealed in drums with bokashi powder, to break down food waste.Implementing the upcycling planThe final facts and figuresThe resultant diversion from landfill was excellent, with a 74.6% diversion rate for the event. This equates to more than ten metric tonnes of diverted waste, nearly three-quarters of which was glass and PET collected in the skips. The diversion reduced not only landfill volumes but also carbon footprint. WISP worked out the amount of lifecycle greenhouse gas savings associated with industrial symbiosis material exchanges as 2 743kg CO2 equivalent.74.6%Diversion from landfill, this equated to10Metric TonnesThe success of the initiative“We are thrilled by this achievement. Intricate planning was needed to reach our sustainability targets, such as separating glass and paper waste, and liaising with all the role players, such as cork suppliers and stand manufacturers, to ensure our sustainability targets were met. Next time, we will focus on offsetting the carbon footprint created by the significant air travel involved.”~ Julia Moore, Acting Communications Manager, Cape Wine. The Forum focuses on how to scale up the transformation of regional architecture related to smart institutions, investment, integration, industry and innovation.World Economic ForumWhat we set out to achieveMuch of the waste generated at the CTICC comes from materials produced by clients. As such, the CTICC encourages exhibitors to donate their unwanted stand building materials to community organisations. To further promote this, the CTICC carried out a pilot waste project for the World Economic Forum on Africa (WEF) event to both reduce waste volumes and divert waste from landfill.Implementing the upcycling planThe initiative was undertaken in collaboration with the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP), delivered by GreenCape. The World Economic Forum took place at the CTICC and incorporated the Grow Africa Summit. With a focus on the separation of recyclable from non-recyclable and compostable waste, as well as the ‘upcycling’ of valuable waste such as wood, the project was a trial run and a concerted effort toward enhancing the centre’s triple-bottom-line effectiveness. The final facts and figuresThe project was an overwhelming success on three major counts:The event achieved an 83% diversion from landfill. This diversion was predicted to have created an estimated economic spin-off of more than R200 000 for waste solution providers, and thus the Western Cape economy. The client was extremely satisfied with the result and requested that the learnings from the initiative be shared with the organising committee of the main WEF in Davos to assist them to obtain their ISO 20121(Sustainable Events Management) certification.83%Diversion from landfill.R200 000Economic spin-off.
