iKhaya le Themba

iKhaya le Themba is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established to empower communities and provide educational and holistic support to families and children.

Their mission:

Founded in 2004, iKhaya le Themba operates from a purpose-built campus in the informal settlement of Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, to provide resources for educational mentoring, home-based care, community pantries, urban farming, and skills development.

What they do

They create safe and nurturing spaces for orphaned and vulnerable children who have suffered from the effects of HIV/AIDS, poverty, and other stressful life circumstances. These “safe zones” include a structured after-school care programme and a family support centre for skills development.

Their Projects

At the heart of iKhaya le Themba is people empowerment, which is why the NGO also provides skills and enterprise development, as well as training. Students are assisted with educational support encouraging them to finish matric and individuals learn how to generate income, thereby changing the trajectory of their lives and improving their community from the ground up.
