help2read

help2read targets underprivileged primary schools across South Africa, providing children who struggle to read with one-on-one attention.

Their mission:

The gift of literacy can transform a life, a community and even a country. When a person can read, they are able to get the most out of their education, which can lead to securing a job and breaking the cycle of poverty. This results in strong, empowered communities and nations, and help2read is working towards making this vision a reality.

What they do

This non-profit organisation (NPO) is an English literacy intervention programme that has been in operation since 2006. Through consistent literacy input, reading help and fun activities, the children that participate in the programme not only learn to read, but fall in love with it.

Literacy Tutor support

Their projects

The organisation recruits and trains unemployed, literate adults from township communities to be Literacy Tutors who, in turn, assist with teaching and running the programme in township schools. The tutors receive an income and participate in personal development and work readiness programmes, helping to secure a better future for themselves and their families.

This full-circle approach means that not only do our youth benefit but so do those who assist them. This type of support is crucial to transforming and uplifting communities.
